They're filling an old open pit mine with rubbish and harvesting the methane that comes out of it for energy. They are also remediating the effects of the old mine site, so it's getting less polluted over time.
It was planned to take up to 20% of Sydney's yearly rubbish but I'm not sure how much it actually handles.
I did chemistry research there on the old tailings ponds for University. It is easily the worst smelling place I've ever been.
