It's not like there's an entire field of study dedicated specifically to excavating and examining the material culture of different civilizations, or an entire field dedicated to how early man interacted with and utilized the plants around him.

The general consensus among historians, archaeologists, and botanists is that this method of companion planting has been used for millennia. Even if it were not, it remains a useful way to increase yields and reduce labor due to the ability to utilize less fertile soils, making it a worthy consideration for small scale agriculture.
