Watch some youtube videos, there's a ton of really cool, way better DIY solar generators. This one's just about as bare bones as it gets, while still being mobile, and essentially is the equivalent to a $1000 Goal Zero, and barely worse than a $2000 Kodiak generator (Though for $2000 you could DIY a permanent, scale-able system for a house)
I'm estimating $10k to get a system big enough to let me live a similar lifestyle to the one I have now. There's usually government subsidies associated with that. Solar is just now at the price to break even on a return of investment. A system as large as the one I'm planning would pay for itself in the lifetime of the batteries. The cost of Solar Watts/$ has come down a ton over the last 5 years. If that happens to Lithium batteries, it will be cheaper to be on solar than plugged into the grid.
