>>2809108Merkian Missile: Elite for traveling down the mountain side and fairly light. Basically an upgraded Swiss Bob, not practical for all winter /out/ activities but they are MADE for mountains and offer a lot of control compared to a normal sled. Para cord between both handles so you can sling it. Wrap it around your hand before taking off or drag it under the sled for some extra braking. LEARN TO SELF ARREST OR YOU WILL DIE!!!
Extra: They make wash-in water proofing. It turns any piece of gear waterproof.
Bagbalm or Petroleum Jelly. You'll want this for any exposed skin to prevent frost bite (and help chapped lips) forehead, tip of the nose and the cheeks are typical locations.
Buy a pack of bic lighters and put one in every piece of gear.
Earmuffs are elite. They are light enough to justify carrying a set in your backpack (Mine are connected directly to a Petzl climbing helmet)
Helmet: If you're on a mountain you want a helmet. Slip -> fall -> head smack = bad rest of the day. Also protects from any ice that comes from above and can save you from getting KO'd during a free slide (if you fail to self arrest and catch air or smack off from something)
Source: Vermont born and raised. I was a Snowmaker on a ski hill for 5 years. I've been winter hiking since I was 12.
Pic related: It's me any time anyone mentions being cold.
