They literally put themselves back into a Rousea-ean "state of nature", and plod along like juicy dairy cows, unaware of and unable to deal with significant danger.
They're like the Eloi from H.G. Wells "Time Machine." Western civilization has reached such a peak of safety and civility, that their primal self preservation instincts have been completely bred out of them. They're one brutal gang bang away from being shocked back into reality.
