Raki is made in Turkey in these little stills all over the place. It's the national alcoholic beverage. Similar stuff is made in Crete, Greece, etc. It is distilled from grape pomace, a leftover from winemaking. A very simple set-up: a source of heat, a kettle to boil the alcohol-containing substance, a condenser on top and a drum full of water with a pipe running through to cool it down. Google image search raki still for more images of funky back-yard stills that look like they have been there for a hundred years or more.
