Yo. I'm back from the 20,000 km 149 day 420 hours bum-on-seat around Australia ride.
I suppose some experience tips are in order, for whatever bike OP gets...
1. get tubes for your tires. As one BMW/GS owner I met discovered, dented rim == bikebrick.
2. if you're going into /really/ hot areas on a biggish bike, get the oil-cooled engine option if possible. The awesome Harley riders I met at South Hedland WA told me that water-cooled engines are useless out there-- with 80degC road temperatures, water is useless. My small air-cooled bike didn't have much trouble, though.
3. anticipate everything... phone ahead when you're near to needing new tires, etc.
