At first I did not go out of my way to use repurposed materials, in fact I never really heard of the concept to be honest. But I ran into a lot of great materials that were weathered, in good shape, and looked like they would blend into the woods.
The repurposed siding saved me a ton of money and worked out great. I also used some used lumber for the structure/deck, but mostly all of the framing lumber was bought new.
I suppose if I have a tip, is to be creative with wood you find. The siding was actually an old fence, which I carefully took apart and cut to size. Check around, there's always free wood. I've even seen cabins built almost completely out of pallets.
Some of the main costs came from the new framing lumber, screws/nails, the roofing (Sheet shingling, which is cheaper than shingles) and plywood (which I could have gotten around, but it was convenient and I found a decent deal on craigslist for some pieces I used. Also, buy your windows used. Got mine at the Habitat for Humanity store. It looks ugly right now in the pic, but it works and I can paint it in future.
Any other questions, feel free to ask.
