I was getting skunked regularly until I went to the local tackle shop and asked the guy what to get and he turned me on to some lures that have produced like crazy and he explained to me why so many people were failing to catch fish and it's simply because they were throwing all kinds of giant ass lures out there that didn't even closely resemble anything the bass have in their diet
Since I've done that I've literally been catching bass everytime I've gone out
Also look for places where the fish are likely to be
If the lake you're fishing is huge then you will have to fish certain areas to find the fish
Look for points, areas like those with the arrows in the pic
Also look for areas of cover such as trees overhanging the water, lillypads, downed trees in the water, etc as these are likely to hold the fish because when they aren't feeding they seek out the safety of cover
There are also underwater channels in lakes where fish also like to congregate but these can be hard to find without a boat or local knowledge, again something your tackle shop can help you with
