Super Simple Setup
This is the classic hook, line, and sinker setup that can be used for a variety of fish species. Note that the pound test (maximum tensile strength) for your line, size of the hooks, size of your indicator/float, and weight of your sinker will depend on the size of the fish you're after.
Begin by tying your hook to the end of your fishing line, then adding some split shot anywhere from 4 to 8 inches above it. Heavier weight will need to be used in strong currents. Next, determine how deep you wish to fish depending on what species you're targeting. If you aren't targeting anything specific then you can simply add your float 1 to 3 feet above the split shot weights. Finally, add your chosen bait to the end of your hook. A piece of bread rolled up into a ball is normally a safe bet. Earthworms or nightcrawlers are also typically highly successful. Do take care to follow local fishing regulations when selecting your bait, however, as some places, such as National Parks, forbid live bait to help prevent the introduction of invasive species.
