Some recollections - parties at isolated logging camps where news from the outside world, and especially new reading material, were basically priceless. HDT was a hit out there.
Talking with their half-indian guide about surviving in the wilderness..Guide says he couldn't do it, but his grandfather probably could. White men's guns and civilization made /innawoods/ too easy. This was around 1850, the native population in Maine had already given up on ancient survival techniques.
Serious portaging! Their guide was a beast.
Being told, "No, don't fish here, the trout in this lake are too big, we'll capsize."
Well-written and each chapter is essentially a mini essay that you can enjoy one at a time.
