The 2008 financial crisis was just a speed bump in that process. We live in an overly complex society, and the support for that complexity is being eroded. That is what the process of collapse is. This is like watching a house that nobody is maintaining. At some point, you don't know when it is going to crashing down, but you don't want to go inside for fear that you might cause it. When it does go boom, it will be dramatic, but the process started a long time ago.
The mechanism that could lead to rapid collapse for us is the relationship between the US Dollar and oil.
