The mining company still "mines" copper from the water that has flooded the pit by putting it in a tank full of scrap iron and letting the copper precipitate out. There's also a water treatment plant to keep the level of the pit water below the water table, so the groundwater flow doesn't reverse and contaminate all the groundwater with copper and sulfuric acid.
