Personally I'm in love with fire and I will always recommend it to people since its near and dear to my heart.
That being said, only do it if you are passionate and unwilling to quit when shit gets hard. It can be grueling and soul crushing, but its also the most fun I've ever had and the only job where I could lay down every night and feel like what I did was something making an actual difference, and was getting paid decent to do it.
Going career is hard without prior volunteer or regular fire experience. A lot of people do a handful of seasons before they go perm, but its always hard. Literally just being present and doing the bare minimum goes a long ways in the real workplace. If you put the work in and you are willing to work without complaining you can get a lot of options through fire.
It is very hard for people that are east coasters to get into fire without doing some type of volunteer work or working for the state forestry/fire commission. I did the FFT2 classes online through NWCG and then applied to over 120 different positions on USAjobs before I actually started getting inquiries back. Out of probably the 20-40 that I got referred for, only 3 were fire. All it takes is getting that foot in the door, but I fully acknowledge how fucking hard it is out here.
