I've had dozens of bear encounters way out in the bush, mostly black bears, some didn't budge, some came in closer for a better look/sniff, some stood up on their hind legs, but mostly they just move along, often running away.
I've never wanted a gun but instead rely on what's around me, and small tools like bearspray. I smash logs, I scream etc etc. Usually just talk to them.
I realize that bears can and do attack occasionally, but really, people need to calm down. When I used to work along the sea-ice in the high-arctic I carried 12-guage. There it is needed. Polar bears are another story...
