Inverter-type generators are more efficient, they can throttle the engine RPM dependent on load so they'll run with less fuel. They're also safer for electronics like TVs or battery chargers. A "true sine wave" or "pure sine" inverter is the best, most are modified-square wave outputs. Modern switch-mode power supplies are fairly tolerant of that, but some devices do have trouble handling that weird waveform.
