I guess I should have worded it better, the people in places like that tend to be more independently minded and whatnot, even though they vote one way a lot of people in those types of communities tend to have this sort of weird eclectic mix of both right and left views that becomes evident when you talk to them. I got the same thing when I was in parts of New Mexico and parts of North Carolina, both politically mixed states. This sort of thing seems prevalent in towns like alpine I suspect it comes about from being in a rural community yet also a artsy and hip place.
