I would argue that most current pipe smokers picked up the pipe because of elderly family members that they saw smoking a pipe. From personal experience, the reason I smoke a pipe is because of my great grand uncle who smoked a pipe his whole life. He lived to 91. Plus, your argument that pipes are associated with old men because they’re out of fashion makes no sense. There’s plenty of stuff that’s out of fashion that isn’t associated with old men. Associated with a bygone era, yes, but not old men specifically.
