When our Brazilian guide heard of this he went to his gym (he practices BJJ) and picked up some light weight rashguard pants. And over those we just wore our kneehighs. It practically saved our lives, i swear i would have died without it. Since then, when i camp during summer i wear those with some durable shorts. Sure it makes you look like a douchebag, but you're not in the woods to look like a model.
