i'd feel comfortable doing that with about 50 acres, though i'm sure it's more than doable on half that. a large portion of that should be a woodlot, for your heating needs. you should treat it though as a job. it will be work, but the payoff is worth it. also there will be a learning curve, but once you get things figured out it's gravy. start by growing a garden full of easy stuff. potatoes, squash, green beans, peas. grow enough for over 100% of what you will need. better to have too much than not enough. the extra you can barter or give to friends/family. chickens are fucking awesome animals to have for a household. consider rabbits also for low maintenance, cheap meat. bees are the best. a little expensive to get into, buying the hives and gear, but well worth it imo. you get what you put into them. if you know your shit and keep those bees busy they can produce massive amounts of honey. i got like 7 gallons last year from mostly 1 hive, and i'm not even a really good beekeeper. i mostly just like to watch them and see what they are building. i'd also like to push raising a pig or two. they are super easy to take care of, and provide lots of meat. also learn to butcher yourself and save a couple hundred dollars. i went and helped out with a couple of killing/butcherings to learn the basics. i've just started getting into sausage making, dry curing, smoking, etc. so much fun, and you get a premo product at the end.
