That's either your lack of experience, lack of focus, impaired mental faculty, and/or level of tiredness. It is never the environment. You need to go with someone else who is experienced. You need to take breaks often and access each of the 4 things mentioned above and estimate what your halfway point may be based on that assessment. Ask yourself if you need to turn back now, make camp and rest, etc.
Keep in mind that, "lack of experience," will mean everything from how to step & move to having the wrong equipment or not enough equipment. Anytime you fuck up, even in the slightest, you need to very seriously access why you fucked up.
