>>508505what you surf fish out there in NJ? sharks? bluefish, stripped bass?
Out here in SoCal, you can't do bait and wait with a long ass rod and a sand spike, uless you're going for sharks. Main fish you catch is pic related, barred surfperch, the medium ones are 6-10 inches long, after that you get into the 12+ inch models, which hit like a rock, but are only aroud 2-3lbs. The trophy fish though are california corbina, spotfin croakers, and legal size california halibuts, as well as larger fish which are commonly caught in deeper water like white seabass or some of the other type of seabasses we have here.
All this typically with 8lb-15lb leaders, lots of fun, but have to be active, always moving and looking for holes. Me and my uncle take it to the extreme, we've gone early in january, when the wet sand feels like ice in nothing but 3-4 layers of clothing from the waist up and just boardshorts below that, we wade into kneehigh water from sunrise to sunset, with almost never nothing to eat inbetween but a couple of protein bars and water.
