These ones are the best for deep snow excluding some bigger traditional designs. Pros: relatively light, compact, no crampons. Anything with crampons sucks ass in near-zero weather. I don't think it would make sense for you to make your own if you're in the mountains. The traditional indian designs are not intended for that.
