As for catching fish, you got to get good at "reading the beach".
That is, finding where there are holes, currents, or throughs. This type of structure holds bait and by default attracts fish such as perch, corbina, halibut, shovelnose guitarfish, croaker, etc.
Look up some pictures on those type of structure, its usually areas of water that look darker, or areas where waves don't break even if they should.
When you're fishing the bait, you got to follow your bait with the current, don't just cast and stay still like a statue. Cast up current, and once your line is in line perpendicular to the shore, walk with it and after 5 minutes, if you haven't get bit, reel in, check your bait and cast again.
You're from SD, north county I assume?
This are the basics of fishing sand crabs, I didn't even go over fishing with artificials such as spoons and swimbaits. Keep at it and like anything practice, and try to go out there too, don't just stick to the beach, try to get out every once in a while, you'll be repaid with fish such as pic realted.
