Lyon already has decent outdoor opportunities the way it's sandwiched between mountain ranges but Montpellier has a nice central location between Alps and Pyrenees too, with the rugged parts of the Massif Central really close by
The city is indeed smaller than Lyon but pretty comfy, it's 100% in the Mediterranean zone so architecture and vegetation reflect that, as well as people it's a generally laid back place. Common transports are very efficient and you may try to sex the ton of Latinas studying there
Basically if you haven't hated Lyon you should be fine in Montpellier since they usually get the same kind of criticism. Like expensive rents and immigrants. Not gonna go on a debate about brown people here since other boards already do it constantly but it roughly similar to Lyon
Marseille is even larger than Lyon so not what you're looking for. The coast west of the Rhône really doesn't have much in terms of actual cities it's more like a fuckton of small towns, you could still look up places like Narbonne, Béziers and Perpignan but they're a magnitude smaller
East of the Rhône the coast is more densily populated and the mountains are in your backyard but it feels crowded imo unless you actually live in said mountains rather than immediately on the coast. But then no cities at all
Overall yup don't see why not. There'd be more options if you didn't care about moving to a true city but if you want one Montpellier is fine. Also I assume you're fine with summer heat if you've lived in Valencia
