What i usually do is set up the tent with a cold ditch (idk what it's called) and a fire. I agree on the wood. Birch bark is a godsend, as it's everywhere and is some of the best kindling you can get effortlessly.
Pic related is, imo, the best all purpose campfire for winter. It's easy to build, burns well and your cooking pot sits stably on top.
