While compact, it's also difficult to do in the field as the worst light and weather tend to yield the best results. Have your technique down before you have to put it to use in a place where your washes dry super fast or not at all and you have to balance your board on your lap.
It doesn't take a full palette to get good results but anon has made some very shrewd choices that work well together. Pigments have very different properties and some don't mix, I wouldn't start with artist grade paint but the cheap kits contain a lot of HUEs that look and act nothing like the real pigment. If something isn't working by the book, it's either that or the paper.
