I keep meaning to explore the Llanberis slate quarry there's supposed to be some cool shit up there.
Pic related (this is an imageboard after all) is a slate hone quarry in snowdonia with the water powered grinding wheel on the left. I spent ages looking for a nice bit of slate that could be called a hone as I thought it'd be nice to sharpen my knives on something I'd found in a place like that. no luck though. Seems over the 100 or whatever years since it was in use it's all fucked off. Kinda not surprising eh.
Kinda related and while i'm on a ramble about this shit - The copper mines up on Snowdon are pretty interesting, I read about 'em in an old book a friend lent me. They changed hands fuck knows how many times and never really made any real money mainly because of the problem of getting the produce to a road - they had all kinds of expensive tramways and even a cable car at one point. It was a bit of a scam it seems, selling mines to wealthy types in the city when that sort of thing was fashionable. I imagine a lot of those old workings have similar stories behind 'em.
