All you need to make a new handle is wood and a knife. Sandpaper is optional. I've made about 20 handles for old tools I've bought from yard/garage sales and antique stores. It's really easy and only takes about 15 minutes max, if your knife is sharp. But, if you are camping and just need something quick, you have make a new one in about 5 minutes. The hard part will be getting the old handle out, if it gives you any trouble at all though. It'll only take more time if you want it perfect, or looking really nice, etc.
Here's a few I made last year for tools that didn't have handles. I got all the tools from a friend and all the hardwood from my backyard.
