We're allowed to do our thing so long as people get their next phone or video game or SUV, but heaven help you if your research produces facts they don't like. It's no accident the intelligentsia are the first ones rounded up and executed in any revolution.
This knowledge takes a great deal of the fun out of being more knowledgeable than others, but then that's the way of knowing truth- it rarely makes us happier. Happiness comes from THINKING you're smarter than everyone else, and actual smart people generally don't get to partake in that low-brow pleasure.
