Don't be suckered by the advertising, water "resistant" means it's only sufficient for dashing from your car to the grocery store entrance
but if you're out in the rain for any length of time, you'll get soaked thru and thru.
And while old school style rubberized rain gear will keep the rain off, you'll be sweating your ass off and end up almost as wet on the inside
and just as miserable.
Personally, I feel a GoreTex jacket (or similar modern water PROOF yet breathable fabric) is a critical /out/ item everybody ought to have,
same goes for GoreTex boots.
Absolutely worth the money IMO.
