https://www.ammoland.com/2020/03/update-handgun-or-pistol-against-bear-attack-93-cases-97-effective/There's even a bunch of cases where .22 pistols or rifles were used to kill bears. Although the one guy shot 18 times, hit 14 times, and only found 2 bullets in any of the bear's vitals. This is the guy who had hunting dogs with him that distracted the bear while he reloaded. From reading the other stories it really does seem like .22 is totally insufficient for bear defense.
In a lot of these cases the bear gets shot and runs off, rather than immediately crumpling, although it seems like most times the bear does eventually die soon after being shot. At least in the 9mm cases, the bear seems to always die eventually.
Anyway, it does seem like pistols mostly work. For best results it reads like you want 10mm, .40, .44 magnum, .45, .454 Casull or .460 S&W, all of those calibers have 100% success rate once fired at the target. The failures seem to clump among .357, 9mm or .22.
There's even a report of Taurus Judge being successfully used.
