My "Level III Assault Pack" I've had about 8 years does great for hikes <10 miles with about 25 lbs of gear (minimalist for multi-day backpacking trip). I can use the MOLLE to attach a canteen, and FAK. My Marmot Atom sleeping bag and Thermarest both fit INSIDE with room left for a pair of socks and some food. It's actually pretty comfortable with all this, wide foam shoulder straps, chest and waist straps, all VERY adjustable.
