Always used cal topo and printed pdf's. Google earth/maps for scoping out trails and terrain. I've bought several of those tom harrison maps but wouldn't hike with them, only useful for finding roads.
>>2550000 is right, printing on 8.5x11's you have to print multiple sheets to get any semblance of detail for a longer trek. question for you navigators, If I have a map and compass and know how to use it, is a gps worth it? I mostly stick to trails and don't do much bushwacking/roaming. I want an inreach type device in case I break a leg but don't know if I want just a basic communicator style or a higher end one.
