if i really need to save on weight i usually just bring some BP-5, a good calorie & nutrition value to weight ratio. it doesn't taste of anything tho, so it is bland (can be made in to a porridge if mixed with water)
anyhow, i don't know what the availability is the the US, but i would bring some Orifo soft-packs with mackarel in tomatosauce or some paté (really i use a lot of stuff from the national MRE, the contents are incredibly high quality in ours vs. most other countries)
