There are actually many good ways to do this I have seen around the world, almost every indigenous people worked out a different way.
If you can use modern or synthetic materials then obviously do so, this is just for designs that are easy to construct; just cut the top off a large plastic container and drill holes in it and don't fuck around.
The biggest distinction is whether you are making.
A. a carry frame, quick and good for solid objects/water bottles/children.
Pic related, Less comfortable but quick and sturdy
B. a basket
The best option, but very slow and not worth it if you've carting things liable to damage it (rocks)
C. a skin, with or without a frame.
The best way to carry grain and obviously liquids
For shoulder cords this is where para-cord is actually good, or failing that large woven grass-fibers or bamboo straps (they won't cut into you).
Traditionally many baskets have a strap resting on the head, it takes a lot of getting used to but if you are going uphill is neat- Hmong
For poles you can obviously drill wood but spare aluminum poles left lying around work too; I wouldn't risk tent poles.
I'll try to find some images or drawings I made of Himalayan belt baskets
