I never thought of it as an outdoor thing. Though I think I did call it 'spelunking' since I always wound up in some weird surreal overgrown cave-like place. The things you see. It looks like some apocalypse setting. Trees growing in rooms with broken roofs, huge dark underground chambers with enormous, nameless machines sleeping with little critters scurrying about. Such strange noises, echos and smells.
Vandals and homeless tend to ruin it though. They do bad stuff and attract the attention of whoever is trying to sell it, then barriers are put up.
