Hike. A lot. Be able to carry 50+ pounds for 16 hours continuously. Also be able to run for a really long time, speed isn't as important as endurance.
I'll be real with you, it was the hardest shit I've done. Fucked my feet up real bad and made my joints achy for a couple months after. Being physically fit is a big part, but I think mental toughness is way more important. Just make sure its something you really want to do before you commit to an entire season.
I went into it wanting to be on sawtooth, afterwards I decided not to. It's just unending, grueling, manual labor. The crew is fucking awesome and the supe is a really good guy, but the work is just physically taxing and mind numbing. Still probably learned more in those 1.5 weeks about on-the-ground fire behavior than the entire rest of the summer. I'll go back as a detailer if they want me back, but I know I couldn't handle an entire season of that.
