>>485887They are only for the chicks when they are very young. Once they get older they get put into a larger run. As adults they get a fenced in area that is a little over a acre in size in my orchard and around a pond. They occasionally get let out into another 2 acre lot, but they don't usually stray very far from places where they can hide from hawks quickly.
About 15-20 chicks can comfortably fit into 1 of those cages to a certain age. That is also an indoor cage mainly used for winter. The outdoor cages are much larger and far sturdier just in case someone's dog finds its way under the parameter fence or raccoons/foxes attack. The latter happens all the time. This is what my main outdoor cage with run looks like. It is only for chicks large enough to hold their own body temperature without heat lamps. Now that I have smaller, easier to move, indoor cages I no longer need to use that heavy one for small chicks.
