The hammock's a DD jungle hammock, in that pic I had the tarps on it (fitted tarps that go on the 'canopy" or on the bottom/hammock part. It was below freezing so I wrapped it up to break any wind and stay as warm as possible. And yeah the side hammock is for booits, water bottle, etc. If I'm expecting rain I'll put a proper tarp up over both hammocks. (hard to see but pic related)

yeah it's ok but it will let water in if there's heavy rain or wind. I bought an extra fitted tarp though so I can put one on the top and oe on the bottom to make a nice capsule. it's true that water will still blow in under the top a bit but having the tarp on the bottom as well really helps keep me and my underquilt dry and clean, plus it's a nice windbreak. when i've camped in proper rain i absolutely string up a proper tarp though.

If you just tarp it like pic related condensation is no issue. They're warmer if you have an underblanket and your tarp setup works well enough as a windbreak. Without an underblanket you'll be quite cold because your weight compresses your blanket/sleeping bag too much to insulate. I started hammocking about 15 years ago and never looked back. Only on a few specific occasions have I groundplebbed since then.
