>>873272piers closed thats why I mentioned the kayak in the morning before the winds pick up. its a fun place for me to kayak fly fish because of the schools of baitfish around the ship. capitola is hit or miss and I ride my skateboard down first to see if anyone is getting anything. In the pic the fish looking ones are gulp minnows in 2 sizes. the others are gulp camo worms 2" size. Pinch a bit off the top and thread on #6 or 8. work pretty good for surf perch but if you plan on fishing surf here a lot I suggest you make a sand flea rake. perch and stripers love sand fleas. light surf gear works for sp at the beach and maybe to make bait but you need a crab net to get any bigger fish you catch up to you. foul hooked a bat ray with a lc110 and it nearly spooled me on a 4000 size reel and had to ask a old asian dude next to me if i could borrow his net to get it up. If you hook a legal halibut you wont be able to bounce it over the rail with 10lb braid so yeah maybe something a little bigger is ideal because of the piers height.
I use a 100 size with 10lb braid and a 10' noodle rod for sabikis, fun setup when smelt are around and a 300lexa 30lb braid 20lb wind on with a mh swimbait rod for live bait and throwing swimbaits. And yeah ive hooked and been spooled by a seal before. seals dont give a fuck. Also you know you can rent boats and kayaks there right? Its a easy paddle to the kelp beds. lots of fun rockfish lings perch ect..to catch. Another area is the points on sea cliffs going towards natural bridges if youre into cliff fishing..
