Just use needle nose pliers to extract those strips from used windshield wipers. They come in 2 kinds, ones that have smooth sides, the ones you want and ones that have notches taken out of the sides which you don't want. you can normally get these for free at any auto repair garage/gas station that sells and replaces these for customers. Just tell them what you are looking for and sometimes they will save them up for you. I have enough to make 20 more kalimbas if I ever get around to it. You can also use metal rake tines from a leaf rake. It really depends on their thickness. Antique rakes have the thinnest metal. (pic related)
I used an aluminum rod from ACE home center for the top, to press down on the tines, and a brass rod on the bottom for the tines to be pressed against on the front. Everything is screwed to a U-shaped piece of wood using a bolt and a "tee nut".
