(I managed to seat the Stan's yellow rim tape without one) In reality I ought to carry a folding tire and 4 oz of fluid, because in theory the fluid will fix small holes, but if I rip the tire on a rock I would just put on the spare + fluid in the field.
When I started putting this together a year ago, there weren't many 650b tires, but now there are a lot. Vee Rubber makes some interesting patterns, available on eBay and other places. I am running the Vee Rubber "Mission." I can't find anything 650b at the local shops, though. They might not want to stock a new size just yet.
I built it almost entirely through internet shopping. I think I got the bars and stem locally and the seat + post were what I already had lying around.
