Bikes are not universal, despite what people who don't ride bikes might want to tell you.
A safe, low-maintenance choice with a wide array of uses is a rigid steel 29er, but it's not going to be optimal if you just want to go fast on pavement or ride down actual mountains.
Do not fall for the hybrid meme. Also stop thinking in brands, they are no good and bad brands, only models, and they usually (but not always) correlate with the price.
