Always make sure there's no branches hanging above your fire.
>>1488236I'm not too sure what you mean with the leaves, but if theres leaves on the ground, you want to clear them from where your fire will be. You definitely don't want leaves in your campfire. A "log cabin" type of fire will pretty much take care of it's airflow by desing, but when you need to blow to fan the flames, it should be a looooong steady blow. Like a looong sigh when somebody has f-d up real bad.
>>1488398If by organic matter you mean soil, it's fine. Won't spread if you don't screw around and dig it in a little bit, as you tried already. Keep the soil you dig out in one pile though so you have something to choke the fire if need be.
