It's basically a speaker cone being used as a microphone, so it picks up big thuddy low frequencies. Unlike a condenser it has extremely high SPL tolerance so you can put it in front of a kickdrum or bass cabinet or other boomboom and it gets beautiful recordings of ~<300Hz. It has a very distinct sound because of the relatively slow step response of the speaker cone and the compliance of the cone/motor. I've used the yamaha ones a lot in the studio and they're usually gold, but they're so overpriced I never bought one.
I built one though out of a drum shell and a polymer subwoofer driver I had lying around. Sounds just as good as the yamaha.
