If you hydrate correctly you’ll shed water through your sweat and the cotton will soak up the water, giving you an evaporative cooling effect while also blocking most UVA/UVB light from your skin, preventing burns and blistering and reducing your risk for skin cancers.
Also to reiterate on staying a night out in the desert, keep a couple jackets with you. Your shirt will presumably still be moist by nightfall and you can go into hypothermia in the desert. Layer yourself with a jacket and then the space blanket.
