Basically. Smaller weights and bobbers also make detecting bites easier. The main reasons for 4 or 6 pound mono for trout is

Ok I have some tips

Sometimes a Palomar knot will finish seating it's self if you're just pulling the tag

If you're not lubricating your knot with water or saliva before you seat it you're not giving yourself a fighting chance

Sometimes the loop will pull down wrong, pinch the line and loop so that I seats on the top of the knot like it's supposed to.

Basically after $300 a fly rod doesnt get much better you're just getting a status symbol. The fish dont care how much your rod costs. If I had a grand for just rods/reels/lines burning a hole in my pocket and I was looking past entry level I'd get something like an echo river glass in 2 or 3 weight, and something in the way of a 9 foot 6 weight with a medium fast action. I think an echo ion xl would serve the purpose well. Add a redington behemoth to the 6 weight and an orvis battenkill to the 2 or 3 weight, and an airflo line to both. The 6 weight you'll want the general purpose line, and for the glass rod you'll probably be happiest with a double taper line. I like to cut double tapers in half for small stuff because that gives me two 50 foot lines and a 50 foot cast on a 2 or 3 weight is tricky to say the least and in water small enough to justify it you're seldom casting over 20 feet. Ypu want a floating line for both, and you might pick up a super fast sink poly leader for the 6 weight. If you're going to be targeting fish in the sub-14-inch range, you'll want the 2 or 3 weight, and if you expect to catch 10 inch fish and up the 6 weight will be great. The reason I reccomend a 6 weight is it will give better access to streamer fishing, and more back bone if you hook in to a trophy brown trout on that streamer. The extra weight in the line also makes casting nymph rigs with bead heads and split shot easier.
