This is my first year seriously gardening and I grew kale that I saved seeds from last summer, since it overwintered and produced pods. I did tomatoes and all that too, which went fine, but the extent of my kale's growth is blowing me away. I fertilized it once with azomite and some all natural fertilizer which was mostly shellfish dust. So far I'd rather grow kale than almost anything else, because it's so perfect. The only problem I had was at the start of the summer aphids were going crazy on them. Killing them and spraying the leaves with baking soda/soap mixes helped remove them and now the plants, I have five, are all flourishing.
Personal opinions on what I grew - I also want input on other kale varieties if anyone has experience.
>lacinado
Worst one for me, magnetized all the pests, grew the least, tasted the worst.
>crimson kale
Stunted compared to Red Russian, tasted fine, was pretty. Slow to start too, red russian was nearly twice this plant's size (Grown the same way at the same time) for the first month.
>red russian
Not liked by youtubers but is hands down the best kale I've grown, huge soft leaves, massive resistance to pests and will likely produce leaves through december even in the snow
While I was gardening for myself more than anything else, nobody in my life really cares or has taken and interest in it at all, which is pretty disheartening. It might seem like a stupid thing to care about, but gifting people beans and cucumbers and stuff and seeing them buy frozen food and shit instead is demotivating. I want to feed myself yea, but I want to feed others too. Ah well.
