They go through the loops on the top and all the way around the back of the bag, underneath it and through the loops on its bottom, around the sides, through loops on the belt, and then buckle in up front. Makes for an easily adjustable suspension that carries the load comfortably. Otherwise it's one of the worst backpacks ever made.
